About The Kenyan Estate

Kenya MapMtaro Estate is situated in the fertile highlands of Central Kenya, within the Thika district, approximately 40 kilometers north of Nairobi. The estate derives its name from the 'Mtaro,' a hand-dug trench in Kiswahili that channels water to the farm.

The estate provides employment for around 300 workers, supported by a comprehensive social welfare program. All workers and their families have access to clean drinking water, along with free medical care at the estate's health clinic. If specialized treatment is needed, the farm covers the costs at a nearby state hospital. Permanent workers are provided with two-room houses, with the estate also covering the maintenance of these dwellings. To ensure the well-being of the workers’ families, no children under the age of 18 are permitted to work, and a dedicated committee oversees that workers' children receive an education. The estate fosters an open communication culture, encouraging dialogue between workers, union representatives, and management. Additionally, a women's welfare committee has been established to advocate for the needs and rights of female employees.

About the Harvest

The estate experiences two main harvest seasons: April to September and October to December. On average, the estate yields around 260 metric tons of coffee. The cherries are hand-picked, thoroughly washed, and sun-dried whenever possible, ensuring high-quality coffee production.

Environmental Practices

The estate has implemented various environmentally conscious practices to reduce its ecological footprint. Agrochemical use is strictly minimized and carefully monitored. Cherries are sun-dried to conserve electricity, and wastewater from the washing process is naturally filtered through a series of beds. Additionally, coffee cherry pulp is composted and reused as organic fertilizer. A reforestation program is in place, along with soil conservation measures such as using cover crops to prevent erosion and promote sustainable farming.
