ATLAS Earl Grey

Earl Grey is the most elegant of the everyday black teas: a bright, full-bodied cup scented with bergamot, the fragrant citrus that gives it its signature perfume. The black tea keeps it rich and brisk while the bergamot lifts it with a citrusy, floral aroma. Lovely on its own, with a slice of lemon, or with a little milk.

Tasting Notes

The aroma is unmistakable – bright bergamot over a malty black tea. In the cup it's smooth and full-bodied, the citrus giving it a fragrant, slightly floral lift and a subtly perfumed, almost spiced edge, all on a brisk black-tea base. It's refined but not delicate, clean on the finish, and takes milk or lemon equally well. A classic for a reason.

About the Bergamot

Bergamot is a small, fragrant citrus grown mainly in southern Italy, prized for its aromatic oil rather than its juice. That oil is what makes an Earl Grey an Earl Grey – a perfumed, citrusy note layered over black tea. It's been the defining flavoured black tea for nearly two centuries, and it's still the benchmark.

Brewing

Heat fresh water to 90 °C and steep one tea bag for 2½ minutes. Keep to the time so the tea stays smooth and the bergamot fragrant rather than sharp; add milk or a slice of lemon to taste, and brew it stronger for iced Earl Grey.
